781 958

Patent Number 781 958
Date Applied For 6 May 1904
Date Issued 7 Feb 1905
Issued to Herman A Knoke
Location Chicago IL
Current Class/ subclass 269/ 220, 236, 242

Drawing in Patent 781, 958 to Knoke used by Handy, Full Size, 1700W x 3000H, 27K

Illustration of Patent

The illustration has 3 figures:

  1. the whole clamp, shown in two positions
  2. a cross section, showing the interior passageways for the central screws, and
  3. the detail of a handle.

Oddly, the two witnesses to the drawing are the not the two witnesses to the specification.

Description of Patent 1

Quoting the second and third paragraphs of the specification:

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of clamps used in carpenter and cabinet work in which the jaws are adjustably connected by a right-and-left screw passing through them near the read end of the clamp and a similar screw passing through them near their transverse centers, each screw having its bearings in a pair of shafts journaled within the jaws to extend across the screws at right angles to the latter for adapting the jaws to be set at varying relative angles without binding on the screws through the medium of which the setting is effected.

The object of my improvement is to simplify the construction of the variety of clamp referred to and to greatly increase its strength.

810 543

Patent Number 810 543
Date Applied For 1905 Jan 25
Date Issued 1906 Jan 23
Issued to Herman A Knoke
Location Chicago IL
Current Class/ subclass 269/ 174, 220, 221

Drawing in Patent 810, 543 to Knoke, used by Handy, Full Size, 1700W x 3000H, 27K

Illustration of Patent

The illustration has 8 figures:

  1. The whole clamp, overall looking like a wooden clamp, with stopped and through screws
  2. detail of the release of the stopped screw
  3. detail of the mechanism to hold the stopped screw within the stopped jaw
  4. view in elevation of the sectional nut, in closed position
  5. plan view of the same sectional nut
  6. view in elevation of the sectional nut, in open position
  7. plan view of the same
  8. cross section of a screw being held by a nut

The sectional nuts are identical for both screws.

Again, the two witnesses to the drawing are the not the two witnesses to the specification. However, they also witnessed the earlier drawing.

Description of Patent 2

This patent refers to an earlier application for a patent, Serial Number 206, 670, filed 6 May 1904. It apparently concerns the manner of applying the screw bearings on the jaws. I have not yet obtained a copy.

Quoting the second and third paragraphs of the specification:

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of clamps used in carpenter and cabinet work, in which the jaws are adjustably connected by a screw passing through them near the rear end of the clamp and a similar screw passing though then in the opposite direction near their transverse centers, each screw having its bearings secured to the jaws to extend across the latter at right angles to them for adapting the jaws to be set at different relative positions.

My object is to provide a construction of clamp in the class thus referred to which is adapted to permit of its ready adjustment approximately to any dimensions of work to be held together thereby by throwing the screws out of engagement with their bearings on the jaws and then sliding the jaws upon the screws to effect an approximate adjustment without requiring manipulation of the crews, thus obviating the loss of time and labor by effecting an approximate adjustment of the jaws when it is required to be done by turning the screws in their bearings.
