Table of Contents

Please note that there are now several known specimens of R. Bliss. However, there are varieties, and inconsistencies among them.

Stopped Spindle

Bliss Spindle (Stopped) full size Notice the distinctly barrel shape to the handle, with the flat end. Compare to the shape commonly found on Bliss and Co. which has the more uniform diameter.

At some time, the handle has been flattened on both sides. The patina and wear indicate that this is an ancient, if not original, condition.

Of course, this screw is hand cut.

Through spindle

Bliss Spindle (Through) full size Notice the distinct shape to the handle, with only a hint of a waist, and a distinct taper toward the end. Compare to the shape commonly found on Bliss and Co.

Stopped Jaw

Bliss Jaw (Stopped) This view of the inside shows the placement of the two borings.

Through Jaw

Bliss Jaw (Through), side view This view of the side shows the lack of slope. This feature is found in the early clamps of Sam Wing, which can be dated to the 1790s or 1800s. This feature has also been found in a Buttrick/Chelmsford clamp, which can be dated to before 1837.

This seems to be a characteristic of early clamps.

Maker's Marks

R Bliss Mark in two arcs This is quite a different mark than that used later.
