Information provided by DICK DICKERSON
The patent was first used by the Reno Vise Company; the relationship of the Detroit Machine Screw Works to the Reno Vise Company is not known.

The clamp of interest is the upper one, with metal
spindles.
Note the close correspondence, part by part, and in over all
design, to the all wooden clamps. The patent application goes
into much detail on the changes.

According to the seller of eBay Item number
3254658852:
The one with the metal screw mechanism is marked: "G. Gilden Machine Screw Works, Detroit Michigan, Pat'd April 8, 1884." Arms are 15 3/4" long and screw mechanisms with handle are 19 1/2 " long.
I read the mark as "G. Gildener" in one face/ Detroit/ Machine
Screw/ Works/ Detroit Mich/ Pat'd/ Apr 8, 1884 in another
face.
Additionally, "Machine Screw" is in an arch over "Works"
The mark seems to indicate that G Gildener sold, owned, or used these clamps made by Detroit Machine Screw Works.
These are known in 14 and 16 inch lengths.
The spindles can be described as similar to the usual wooden spindle, except that the screws are metal, and therefore the handles are separate. They function exactly as do wooden spindles, one through, and one stopped.
This makes necessary a number of nuts, embedded in the jaws, to engage the threads. See the patent for details.
