Hammacher Schlemmer of New York

The firm has had several names, reflecting changes in ownership, and legal structure:

• Alfred Hammacher was part owner with Tollner, and the firm was named Tollner and Hammacher in 1859;
• Tollner left, and the firm was A. Hammacher & Co. at some point;
• William Schlemmer changed it from A Hammacher to Hammacher Schlemmer, in 1867;
• it became Hammacher Schlemmer and Co. in 1873.

This company has had four addresses:

• at 221 Bowery, New York, from 1848 to 1859
• at 209 Bowery, New York, from 1859 to 1904
• at 60 Bowery, New York, from 1904 to 1926
• at Fifth Avenue, New York, from 1926 to present.
